Dermatologic diseases in animals are common health problems of the skin, coat, nails and mucosal surfaces. These diseases can be based on a variety of causes: allergic reactions, parasitic infections, bacterial and fungal infections, hormonal imbalances and autoimmune diseases. Bacterial infections can occur on the surface of the skin or in deeper layers, most often caused by an injury or a weakened immune system. Hormonal diseases, such as hypothyroidism, can cause symptoms such as dry skin, hair loss and susceptibility to infection. Early diagnosis and treatment is important because dermatologic problems can lead to more serious health problems if left untreated. Treatment may include topical medications, dietary changes, antiparasitic treatments and sometimes surgery.
