Özet

Bu kitap bölümü, mentorluk kavramınını kökeni, mentorluk sürecinin aşamaları, mentor ve mentinin özellikleri, mentorluk türleri ve etkili mentorluk programının hem bireysel hem de kurumsal düzeyde nasıl uygulanması gerektiğini aktarmaktadır. Kökeni Yunan mitolojisine dayanan mentorluk, tecrübeli birinin (mentor), daha az tecrübeli birine (menti) kariyer ve kişisel (psiko-sosyal) gelişim konusunda yardımcı olduğu paylaşma ilişkisidir. Hemşirelikte mentorluk, modern hemşireliğin kurucusu Florence Nightingale’in ilk mentor hemşire olarak anılması ile tanınmıştır. Hemşirelikte mentorluk, deneyimli hemşireler ile daha az deneyimli hemşireler arasında var olan terapötik bir ilişkidir. 
Hemşirelikte mentorluk programlarının, acemi aşamasında olan hemşirelerin yetkinliğinin geliştirilmesi, kurumdan ayrılma oranlarını azaltması ve destekleyici çalışma ortamının oluşturulması gibi yararları bulunmaktadır. Hemşirelikte mentorluk programlarının etkililiğinde sağlık kurumları yöneticilerinin mentor hemşireleri desteklemesi kritik rol oynamaktadır. Sağlık kurumlarında yönetici desteği ile uygulanan formal mentorluk programlarının başarısında önemli diğer bir unsur ise, hem mentor hem de menti hemşirenin programa katılmaya gönüllü olmalarıdır. Bu bölüm, mentorluk programının hemşireler tarafından benimsenmesi ve hasta bakım sonuçlarında etkili olabilmesi için sağlık kurumlarında mentorluk kültürü oluşturulması gerektiğini tartışmaktadır.

This book chapter explores the concept of mentoring, including its origins, the steps involved in mentoring, the characteristics of mentors and mentees, types of mentoring, and how to implement an well-structured mentoring program at both individual and organizational levels. Rooted in Rooted in Greek mythology, mentoring embodies a reciprocal exchange of knowledge and guidance, where a seasoned individual (mentor) nurtures the professional and personal growth of a less experienced protégé (mentee). In the field of nursing, mentorship stands as a time-honored tradition, deeply intertwined with the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the visionary who laid the foundation for modern nursing practice. This therapeutic alliance, connecting experienced and less experienced nurses, fosters a nurturing environment for professional and personal advancement.
Nursing mentoring programs have benefits such as developing the competence of novice nurses, reducing turnover rates, and fostering a nurturing work culture.The support of mentor nurses by healthcare administrators plays a critical role in the effectiveness of mentoring programs in nursing. A critical determinant of the success of formal mentorship programs in healthcare organizations, nurtured by administrative support, is the active participation of both mentors and mentees. This chapter argues that creating a mentoring culture in healthcare organizations is essential for nurses to embrace mentoring programs and for them to be effective in patient care outcomes.
