Besin tüketim sıklığı anketleri, epidemiyolojik çalışmalarda diyet alımını ölçmek için birincil yöntem haline haline gelmiş ve dünya çapında birçok ülke için geliştirilmiştir. Bu tür anketler, uzun bir süre boyunca ortalama besin tüketimini alan çoğu uygulamada genel diyet ilgisine yöneliktir. Besin tüketim sıklığı anketleri, epidemiyolojik uygulamalarda son derece pratiktir çünkü katılımcılar için genellikle kendi kendine uygulanan bir form olarak doldurmaları kolaydır. (Veri) İşleme, hali hazırda bilgisayarla ve ucuzdur, bu nedenle on binlerce katılımcıya içeren ileriye dönük çalışmalar bile yapılabilir. Kağıt anketler optik tarama yöntemleriyle verimli bir şekilde okunabilir ve web tabanlı anketler daha fazla avantaj ve verimlilik sağlayabilir. Besin tüketim sıklığı anketleri oluşturulurken besinlerin seçimine, soruların netliğine ve sıklık yanıtı bölümünün formatına dikkat edilmelidir. Bu tür anketlerin tekrarlanabilirlik ve geçerlilik açısından performansı bir sonraki bölümde ele alınmaktadır.
