Özet

This review examines menstrual hygiene management (MHM) among adolescent girls, emphasizing its critical impact on reproductive health, education, and psychological well-being. Menarche, the onset of menstruation, typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 16, initiating reproductive capacity through complex hormonal phases across an average 28-day cycle. However, deep-seated societal taboos and a reliance on poorly informed support networks, such as peers or relatives, often leave adolescents unprepared, causing significant fear and anxiety. In low- and middle-income regions, these challenges are compounded by a lack of clean water, privacy, and affordable sanitary materials, leading many girls to use unhygienic alternatives like old cloths. Anatomical factors coupled with infrequent pad changes or improper cleaning techniques significantly elevate the risk of reproductive and urinary tract infections. Nurses and healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in mitigating these risks by providing timely, evidence-based guidance. Essential nursing interventions include educating adolescents on healthy practices, such as changing pads every three to four hours, cleaning from front to back, taking standing showers to prevent infection, and utilizing non-pharmacological pain management techniques like heat application. Ultimately, improving MHM fosters self-efficacy and long-term public health outcomes.
