Özet

Pediatric obesity has emerged as a critical global health challenge in the twenty-first century, driven by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, and obesogenic environmental factors. Characterized by an imbalance between calorie intake and energy expenditure, its prevalence has escalated dramatically worldwide, affecting millions of children and youth. This metabolic condition inflicts severe physical, psychological, and social consequences. Physically, it precipitates early atherosclerosis, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and orthopedic complications. Psychologically, affected children frequently battle low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and social isolation, which are often exacerbated by pervasive peer bullying and social stigma. Diagnosis relies heavily on age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, classifying children above the 95th percentile as obese. Effective management demands a multidisciplinary approach incorporating dietary modifications, regular physical exercise, behavioral therapies, and, in severe adolescent cases, bariatric surgery. Because treating established obesity remains exceptionally difficult, prioritizing community- and school-based preventive interventions is crucial. Nurses play a pivotal role across these preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative spectrums by spearheading family health education, promoting breastfeeding, and supporting lifestyle modifications to optimize childhood well-being.
