Özet

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a form of major depression occurring after childbirth, significantly affecting a mother's hormonal, psychological, and social well-being, as well as her family dynamics. This review evaluates PPD symptoms—such as depressed mood, anhedonia, sleep disturbances, and feelings of worthlessness—along side its intricate risk factors and pathogenesis, which involves multi-system biological, endocrine, and environmental stressors. Crucially, PPD extends far beyond maternal health, profoundly impacting the newborn's physiological, cognitive, and behavioral development. Impaired maternal-infant bonding and reduced breastfeeding quality can lead to lower birth weights, restricted cognitive scoring, disrupted sleep cycles, and heightened emotional or behavioral disorders in the child. While primary treatments include psychotherapy, SSRIs, and advanced interventions like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), or Brexanolone infusion, modern healthcare increasingly emphasizes early prevention. Nurses and midwives hold a pivotal role during the critical 2-to-6-week postpartum window to screen for risk factors, deliver comprehensive family education, and provide essential self-care guidance. Ultimately, effective nursing care and timely diagnosis mitigate the long-term adverse outcomes of PPD, safeguarding the holistic development of the newborn and ensuring healthier long-term community health outcomes.
