Eser, bu tarihi ve siyasi doku doğrultusunda üç farklı edebi türün şaheserlerine odaklanmaktadır: şiir türünde John Dryden’ın veliaht tartışmalarını işleyen "Absalom and Achitophel" eseri, düzyazıda Jonathan Swift’in İngiltere siyasetini hicveden Gulliver'ın Gezileri (Kitap I ve II) eseri ve tiyatroda Henry Fielding’in Başbakan Robert Walpole yönetimini hedef alan The Historical Register for the Year 1736 oyunu derinlemesine analiz edilmektedir.
Political Satire in English Literature, written by Sıla Şenlen Güvenç, provides a comprehensive Turkish resource primarily for students of English Language and Literature, as well as researchers working in the fields of satire, history, international relations, and sociology. The book thoroughly examines the genre of satire, which aims to elevate society to a better point by criticizing individuals, institutions, or social events through wit and sarcasm. Covering the satire tradition in English literature from its ancient origins through the 14th to the 18th centuries, the study sheds light particularly on the Neo-Classical Age (1660-1798), an era dominated by reason and an objective perspective. In this context, critical turning points shaping British political and religious history, such as the Catholic-Protestant conflicts, the Royal-Parliamentary friction, the Civil War, the Restoration Period, the 1868 Glorious Revolution, and the Hanoverian Dynasty, are analyzed. In line with this historical and political fabric, the work focuses on the masterpieces of three different literary genres: John Dryden's poem "Absalom and Achitophel," which addresses the succession controversies; Jonathan Swift's prose satire Gulliver's Travels (Books I and II), which satirizes British politics; and Henry Fielding's theatrical satire The Historical Register for the Year 1736, targeting the administration of Prime Minister Robert Walpole.
