Aromatherapy is the medical or therapeutic use of volatile essential oils derived from plants, absorbed through the olfactory system or the skin, to enhance physical and psychological well-being. Increasingly popular on a global scale as a complement to traditional medicine, this method stands out due to being non-invasive, low-cost, and having minimal side effects. In contrast to the physiological dimension of traditional medications in pain control, it treats emotional and cognitive dimensions such as anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders, thereby increasing the patient's functional capacity and sense of control, while reducing the dosage and adverse effects of analgesic drugs. Rooted historically in nursing discipline back to Florence Nightingale, aromatherapy is today recognized as an independent nursing intervention used in symptom management across a wide clinical spectrum. Literature review demonstrates that frequently used extracts like lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and rosemary significantly reduce pain levels in Covid-19-related chronic fatigue, joint pains such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain in older adults, fistula quarter procedures in hemodialysis patients, chronic lower back pain, and dysmenorrhea. Furthermore, it has been determined to increase satisfaction in labor and post-cesarean pain, reduce post-tonsillectomy drug requirements by 40% in pediatric patients, accelerate episiotomy wound healing, and alleviate pain by affecting neurotransmitters in cancer palliative care. Despite the lack of explicit inclusion of aromatherapy in Turkey's legal regulations, this method remains a safe adjunctive treatment option that enhances care effectiveness, improves quality of life, and lowers costs.
