Health literacy is the capacity of individuals to obtain, process, and understand basic health information to make appropriate health decisions. Classified into three levels—functional, interactive, and critical—this concept is defined by organizations such as WHO, AMA, and IOM. Inadequate health literacy leads to adverse outcomes such as poor disease management, increased hospitalizations, high chronic disease rates, increased mortality, and additional economic costs. This is a severe public health problem globally, and particularly in Turkey, where the limitation rate is 68.9%. Nurses, who spend the most time with patients among healthcare professionals, hold a key and unique position in solving this issue by providing understandable communication and undertaking patient education. Accordingly, incorporating health literacy into the nursing education curriculum is of vital importance.
