This academic study examines the devastating effects of air pollution, a global public health threat, on human health, focusing on its relationship with age-related cognitive decline, dementia, and the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. It emphasizes that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ultrafine particles released from traffic emissions, industrial activities, and domestic heating can easily cross the blood-brain barrier or directly reach the central nervous system through olfactory pathways. This situation triggers chronic neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, microglial activation, and beta-amyloid accumulation in the brain, leading to severe cognitive decline. Strong evidence from clinical and experimental animal studies shows that as exposure duration and concentration increase, verbal and mathematical performance decrease, brain volume diminishes, and the risk of covert brain infarction rises. The study reveals that not only the elderly population but also school-aged children and adolescents experience negative impacts on their learning, attention, and memory processes due to this pollution. Recalling the physical environment-oriented approach ongoing since Florence Nightingale in reducing environmental risks, the author highlights the critical role of public health nurses in protecting disadvantaged groups. Discussing the strategic importance of nursing practices and leadership in health policy development, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaborations through concrete steps, this work serves as an indispensable reference for medicine, public health, environmental sciences, and nursing literature.
