This study, authored by Uğur Sivri, aims to investigate the time series properties and stationarity of the income velocity of money (MV1 and MV2) in the Turkish economy. The analysis utilizes quarterly data covering the period 1987Q1–2022Q1. Nominal income is measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while money supply is calculated based on M1 and M2 definitions using Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) data. Graphical analysis reveals that MV1 is consistently greater than MV2, both series initially increased before declining, and the gap between them narrowed over time. Within the framework of stationarity analysis, ADF, PP, and KPSS unit root tests without structural breaks, as well as Lee and Strazicich (2003, 2004) unit root tests endogenously allowing for one and two structural breaks, were applied. The results of non-break ADF and KPSS tests and the one-break Lee and Strazicich test indicate that both series are non-stationary. In the two-break tests, MV1 remains non-stationary, whereas MV2 is found to be stationary at the 10% significance level under Model C with structural break dates at 1998Q1 (Asian/Russian crises) and 2007Q4 (Great Recession). Consequently, while the velocity of money in Turkey is generally non-stationary, the income velocity based on broad money (MV2) exhibits stationarity when accounting for structural breaks representing major economic crises.
