The eye (oculus), the organ of vision, is a flattened spherical structure compressed from top to bottom, weighing approximately 7-10 grams with a diameter of about 2.5 centimeters, and its anatomy is examined in two main parts as accessory structures of the eye and the eyeball (bulbus oculi). The accessory structures protecting and enabling the movement of the eye comprise the orbit, ocular muscles, fasciae, eyebrows, conjunctiva, glands, and eyelids, which are primarily vascularized by the ophthalmic artery and its branches, while venous blood is collected via the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins into the cavernous sinus, and the innervation is provided by cranial nerves II through VI alongside the sympathetic system. The eyeball itself, where the primary visual process occurs, consists of three layers from outer to inner: the tunica fibrosa (sclera and cornea) providing structural shape and protection, the vascular tunica vasculosa (choroidea, ciliary body, and iris) maintaining nutrition, and the light-sensitive inner neural layer called tunica nervosa (retina) which histologically comprises ten distinct sub-layers stretching from the choroid to the vitreous body and contains photoreceptive cone and rod cells essential for high-resolution vision.
