Ozone is a powerful non-radical oxidant composed of three oxygen atoms found naturally in the stratosphere. Medical ozone consists of a mixture of pure oxygen and ozone, and due to its unstable structure, it must be prepared immediately before application. Administered in gas, water, or oil forms, ozone exhibits strong antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses by destroying cell walls. In dentistry, it offers major advantages as an adjunct to conventional therapies in fields such as biofilm elimination, caries management, dentin hypersensitivity relief, tooth bleaching, and root canal disinfection. While providing a painless alternative for pediatric patients, it effectively eliminates hypersensitivity within seconds by occluding dentinal tubules and achieves successful bleaching by breaking down chromophores. However, it must be applied cautiously as inhalation causes toxic effects on eyes and lungs. Although ozone therapy presents a promising option for various intraoral diseases due to its efficacy on microorganisms, it is not yet frequently utilized in current dental practice because of its potential toxicity and ergonomic limitations; thus, further advanced research is required to optimize clinical outcomes.
