In music education, vocal sight-reading ability is of vital importance for musicians to independently perform new works without needing an instructor and to gain an advantage in their professional lives. However, evaluating this performance skill involves various difficulties and biases due to subjective judgments of evaluators, moods, and non-musical factors such as performance order. To properly fulfill formative and summative functions in evaluation as an integrated part of the teaching and learning process, validity and reliability principles must be meticulously applied. In the literature, various approaches such as note-by-note or measure-by-measure assessment and separating pitch from rhythm components have been adopted to measure vocal sight-reading success; several assessment tools such as Otterstein-Mosher, Cooper, Thostenson, and Henry's VSRI have been designed. Nevertheless, to overcome the limitations of traditional assessment tools, such as lack of diagnostic data, time-consuming nature, and constraints in classroom individual evaluation, significant emphasis is placed on the use of technology today. Computer-based software like SmartMusic and audio recording systems stand out by providing instant objective feedback to students, eliminating human biases, and increasing evaluation reliability. Consequently, it is recommended to increase valid and reliable assessment tools in vocal sight-reading and integrate technological capabilities into solfège instruction.
