In this study authored by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sibel Almelek İşman, the symbolic, religious, mythological, and aesthetic transformation of the rainbow image in Western art from the Renaissance to the present day is examined. Considered a bridge between the supernatural and natural worlds, the rainbow has historically been regarded as a symbol of hope, divine connection, forgiveness, and reconciliation between God and humanity. Symbolizing the divine covenant after the Deluge, the miraculous events during the Exodus, and the majestic throne upon which Christ sits on the Day of the Last Judgment in religious paintings; this image represents the endless cycle of time, the foundational element of color in art, and Iris, the messenger of the gods, in mythological and allegorical works. In landscape painting, masters such as Rubens, Constable, and Church reflected the rainbow onto their canvases as a symbol of autobiographical renewal, faith, and hope by blending it with their personal life experiences. In 20th and 21st-century art, it transformed into a delicate ray of hope amidst chaos in Jackson Pollock's Abstract Expressionist works, while gaining innovative dimensions exploring the interaction of light, color, and space in site-specific installations by contemporary artists like Olafur Eliasson and Gabriel Dawe. Consequently, the text comprehensively analyzes the magic of the seven colors across artistic periods and different genres.
