Quality of Life In Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Due To Renal Calculi

Kidney stone disease is a serious health problem with an increasing global prevalence that significantly impairs patients' quality of life (QoL) due to its recurrence tendency. In the management of this disease, surgical approaches such as ESWL, RIRS, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) are widely used alongside dietary and medical treatments. PCNL has become the primary choice in urology centers worldwide, replacing open surgery, thanks to the high success and stone-free rates it provides, particularly in the treatment of renal calculi larger than 2 centimeters. Operational success in PCNL, which is a minimally invasive method, is directly dependent on proper patient selection, surgeon experience, and the technological devices utilized. However, in addition to high success rates, the PCNL procedure carries a complication risk of up to 83%, including bleeding, urosepsis, fever, and adjacent organ injuries. Today in medicine, treatment effectiveness is measured not only by objective laboratory and imaging results but also by patients' subjective health-related quality of life (HRQoL) feedback. Clinical studies conducted with scales such as SF-36 and the Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life (WISQoL) questionnaire reveal that PCNL, and especially refined mini-PCNL (mPCNL) methods, alleviate patients' bodily pain, improve their social and general health status, and significantly optimize their quality of life.
