Synopsis

This book addresses the issue of representation of women in the novels of non-Western women writers. It examines the influence of alternative perspectives such as Western feminisms, transnational feminism, and Third World feminism on identity formation. The representation of women and gender in Western discourse is also discussed. Identity formation is discussed using the terminology of thinkers like Foucault and Bhabha. The book also focuses on the representation of women in Zadie Smith's novel White Teeth. The representation of Western women and non-Western women in Western societies is examined.
