The European Green Deal: Roadmap for Sustainable Growth and Climate Neutrality
Özet
This study examines the new sustainability policies shaped under the European Union’s (EU) “European Green Deal” (EGD) and the transformations they will bring about both within the EU and on a global scale. First, it explores key policy areas such as the conservation and enhancement of ecosystems and biodiversity, the expansion of forested regions, green transformation in urban areas, and the sustainable management of marine ecosystems. Additionally, strategies to improve air, water, and soil quality in line with the “zero pollution” target are discussed, and the legal frameworks implemented to regulate chemical substances and prevent pollution are evaluated. The second part of the study highlights the importance of the financing and investment instruments required for implementing the Green Deal, research and development activities, and educational initiatives. Turkey’s perspective examines the opportunities and challenges arising from aligning with the Green Deal within the context of existing trade relations and customs union agreements with the EU. Particular attention is drawn to the impacts of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Turkish industry and export dynamics, emphasizing the significance of initiatives such as Turkey’s 2021 Green Deal Action Plan. In conclusion, it is argued that the EU’s Green Deal initiative provides a comprehensive roadmap for achieving global sustainable development goals and combating climate change.
