Children with special health care needs may experience varying degrees of loss, limitations, and deficiencies in their psychological, physical, mental, and sensory skills. These challenges may stem from congenital factors or arise from various causes, such as accidents or illnesses occurring postnatally. Consequently, these individuals often struggle to meet the demands of typical daily living. Oral health, a critical determinant of quality of life, frequently presents significant issues for children with special health care needs. Common oral health problems in this population include inadequate oral hygiene, dental caries, periodontal disease, and orthodontic disorders. It is essential that both dentists and parents receive adequate training to effectively address the challenges associated with the dental treatment of children with special health care needs. Furthermore, comprehensive health policies should be implemented to support the dental and medical requirements of these children. The dental team should devise strategies to enhance oral health by providing comprehensive, school-based programs that include oral health education aimed at skill development, administering fluoride treatments and sealants, and offering dietary and nutritional counseling.
