This book provides a comprehensive evaluation of stereotypes and prejudices in social psychology. Stereotypes are beliefs that individuals hold about the groups that make up society and form the basis of prejudices. The book explores how stereotypes influence the social world around us and the role they play in the current social world. It summarizes the historical transformation in the literature on stereotypes and focuses on their societal functions. The book discusses what stereotypes are and what they are not, and proposes a useful definition. This definition emphasizes the importance of stereotypes for social scientists. The book argues that stereotypes are significant to the extent that they restrict the opportunities of members of the groups that make up society.
